Ethno drop 2026

Denim, told in a traditional Ukrainian voice.

Sand, cliffs and a straw wall that still remembers summers past. Match Denim has unveiled the campaign for its new capsule collection.

The new summer drop, created in collaboration with stylist and fashion columnist Yehor Voronkin, sees the brand speak in a voice unlike anything it has used before, one inspired by traditional Ukrainian dress.

The idea, admits brand owner Iryna Nosenko, never started out as an ethnographic project.

“At first we were thinking about creating an ethnic capsule, a tribute to tradition and to our Ukrainian roots. But somewhere around the sketching stage, the idea grew into something more like a fantasy. What if denim had been evolving within Ukrainian tradition for the last hundred years? What if our ancestors, returning from America, had brought back the first pairs of jeans, and some skilled seamstress had reworked them into a plakhta? What if the plakhta, traditionally woven from wool, had later started being woven from cotton dyed with indigo instead? What if its cut had shifted over time, shaped not only by custom but by the season’s trends? This drop is our answer to that philosophical ‘what if,'” says Iryna Nosenko.

The centerpiece of the capsule is a reimagined plakhta. The brand’s design team based it on a genuine early twentieth century Ukrainian plakhta from the collection of the Ivan Honchar Museum.

From there, the fantasy took over.

“It was important for us not to turn this into another cliché folk costume. That’s exactly why we chose to combine the seemingly incompatible: classic American denim, traditional Ukrainian silhouettes and the season’s current trends, creating something entirely unique,” says Yehor Voronkin.

Trend-driven lingerie lace plays a supporting role in the collection. Light and almost sheer, it enters into dialogue with heavy denim, and that contrast can be felt in the body itself: the toughness of a fabric made for fieldwork against the fragility of lace, traditionally associated with celebration, with what is kept in a hope chest for a dowry.

The collection consists of five complementary pieces: the plakhta, a corset top, a mermaid skirt, a bandeau top and jeans. All of them pair seamlessly with one another, allowing for looks that work equally well for evening and everyday wear.

“We wanted to show that traditional clothing is not a museum piece. It is a boundless source of inspiration, capable of taking on any contemporary form, whether that’s silhouette or fabric,” says Yehor Voronkin.

Match Denim proves that for tradition to stay relevant, it doesn’t need to be preserved behind glass. All it takes is a little imagination and quality denim
